Cortez 3 - Telluride 1 Thurs Apr 24th 5:15 Windy but sunny.
First game and first touches on grass for our girls since Oct 07! With only 1 substitute, due to our Mountain School girls being away, the girls peformed great and worked hard for each other. We came out blazing and showed some nice passing especially from defense to midfield.
Only 2 mins into the game Ryan found herself in the penalty box and took a nice pass from Sarah and hit it clean and hard - their keeper didn't know much about it but just happened to be standing in the right spot. Hannah, in her first competitive game for the club, playing left midfield took some nice passes from Jessie @ left back and put Sarah through for our second shot on goal. Good control and turn of pace to get past the defender but her final shot hit the side netting. Cortez pushed but our defense of Gina, Toni, Julia and Jessie held firm. 20 minutes in we opened the scoring with easily the best goal of the game. Gina picked up the ball midway in our own half took a touch and stroked a nice pass out to Scout on the right wing. Scout looked up and hit a great first-time right footed cross into the middle where Reagan controlled it well, took it inside Cortez' best defender and hit an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner .... 1-0 Telluride. We held that lead into the half. The first play of the second half almost brought us a second goal. From the kickoff Sarah knocked it back to Toni who found Erin with a simple pass to right midfield; she looked up and hit Sarah on a run who beat 2 Cortez defenders with great pace and got a good shot off, under pressure, only to see it again hit the side netting. Cortez now started to push with a strong wind at their backs and they tied it up about 10 mins into the half. A scrappy goal, in off a post, but they all count! 1-1. A few minutes later another attack up the left side finished with Toni felling a Cortez player on the left side of the box, probably a fair, if somewhat harsh, call. Toni didn't agree but kept quiet! Emma stood no chance with the PK, just under the crossbar. 2-1 Cortez. Our heads dropped a little then and we lost our touch for a 10 min spell during which they scored a third. A low shot from the edge of the box found its way through a crowd of players 3-1.
We did find a late surge and a couple of nice passing plays but the day was theirs.
Thanks to Hannah and Emma L for stepping up for their first game. Nice goal Reagan!
We'll get them next time!!
